AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro 3
Two very good earbuds, one of them cheaper. Here is what actually separates them, and who should buy which.
The short answer
Buy the AirPods Pro 3 if you want the quietest pair Apple makes, you work out with earbuds in, or you want the newest software features. Buy the AirPods Pro 2 if you want most of that for less money, which for most people is the sensible call.
Neither is a bad buy. This is not a case where the older model is a compromise you will regret.
What is the same
Both pairs give you the parts people actually use every day:
- Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode and Adaptive Audio, which moves between the two as your surroundings change
- Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking
- Adaptive EQ, which tunes music to the shape of your ear
- A case that charges on MagSafe, an Apple Watch charger, any Qi-certified charger, or over USB-C
- A case speaker and Find My support, so a lost case can be pinged
- Ear tips in several sizes, so you can get a proper seal
- The same one tap pairing, automatic switching and Siri on Apple devices
If your shortlist is "good noise cancelling for an iPhone", both pairs clear that bar.
What is different
Noise cancelling. Apple rates the Pro 3 as the better canceller, and in a plane cabin or an open-plan office you can hear that. The Pro 2 is still excellent; the gap is real but smaller than the gap in the marketing.
Fit and tips. The Pro 3 ships with five sizes of foam-infused tips, against four sizes of silicone on the Pro 2. More sizes means a better chance of a seal, and a seal is where most of the quiet comes from. If earbuds have always felt loose in your ears, this alone may decide it.
Heart rate sensing. The Pro 3 has a heart rate sensor in each earbud that works with compatible fitness apps on iPhone. The Pro 2 has nothing like it. If you train without an Apple Watch, this is the single biggest reason to pay more.
Live Translation. On the Pro 3, paired with an Apple Intelligence enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later. Not available on the Pro 2.
Battery. From Apple's published tech specs: the Pro 3 does up to 8 hours of listening with noise cancelling on and up to 24 hours in total with the case. The Pro 2 does up to 6 hours per charge and up to 30 hours in total with the case. Read that twice: the Pro 3 lasts longer in your ears, the Pro 2 lasts longer before the case needs a plug. Which matters depends on whether your problem is long flights or long weekends away from a charger.
Water and dust. The Pro 3 is rated IP57, the Pro 2 IP54. Both survive sweat and rain. Neither is for swimming.
Who should buy the Pro 3
- You run, cycle or lift, and want heart rate from your earbuds
- You fly often, or work somewhere genuinely loud
- Ear tips have never sealed properly for you
- You want the longest single-charge listening time
- You want Live Translation and have a recent iPhone
Who should buy the Pro 2
- You mostly want commute-and-office quiet, not flight-deck quiet
- You already own an Apple Watch or a fitness tracker
- You would rather put the price difference into something else
- You want the longer total battery life with the case
What about the price gap?
