These are the open-ear AirPods: the shape that sits in your ear with no silicone tip to size, push in, or lose. If ear tips have always felt like a plug to you, this is the pair to buy. Be honest with yourself about the trade-off first, though. An open fit cannot seal your ear canal, so noise cancelling here quiets a room and takes the edge off a plane; it will not shut out a train the way the tipped AirPods Pro 2 does.

What you get for it is comfort you forget about after an hour, and awareness of what is around you without switching modes. Transparency mode and Adaptive Audio still work, and the Apple H2 chip drives Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking, Adaptive EQ, and Voice Isolation so people can hear you on a windy street.

Battery, from Apple's tech specs: up to 4 hours of listening with noise cancellation on, 5 hours with it off, and up to 20 hours in total with the case. Five minutes in the case gives about an hour of listening.

The case charges over USB-C, on an Apple Watch charger, or on any Qi-certified wireless charger, and has a speaker so Find My can ping it. Earbuds and case are rated IP54 for dust, sweat and water.

Do these need ear tips?

No. AirPods 4 use an open-ear design that rests in your ear, so there is nothing to size or swap. If you prefer a sealed fit, look at AirPods Pro instead.

How is this different from the cheaper AirPods 4?

This version adds Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, and a case with wireless charging and a speaker for Find My.

How long does the battery last?

Up to 4 hours of listening with noise cancellation on, 5 hours with it off, and up to 20 hours in total with the case, according to Apple.

Do they work with Android?
