How noise cancelling works

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) uses tiny microphones on each earbud to listen to the sound around you. The earbuds then play a matching sound wave that cancels it out before it reaches your ear.

ANC works best on steady, low sounds: airplane engines, bus rumble, air conditioning, a crowded room. It is less effective on sudden, sharp sounds like a dog barking or dishes clattering. No earbuds make the world totally silent, so be wary of any product that promises that.

Fit matters as much as the tech

Noise cancelling starts with a good seal. If an ear tip is too small, outside sound leaks in and the bass sounds thin. If it is too big, the earbud feels loose or sore.

• Pick earbuds that come with several ear tip sizes.
• Try each size and choose the one that feels snug without pressure.
• Some earbuds include a fit test in their app or phone settings. Use it.

Transparency mode keeps you safe

Transparency mode does the opposite of noise cancelling. It lets outside sound in on purpose, so you can hear traffic, a train announcement, or someone talking to you without taking your earbuds out. If you walk, run, or commute with earbuds in, this mode is worth having.

Battery life: read the fine print

Earbud battery life is usually listed two ways:

• Per charge: how long the earbuds play before they need to go back in the case.
• With the case: the total listening time when you also count the recharges the case holds.

Check whether the number was measured with noise cancelling on, since ANC uses extra power. A quick charge feature is useful too, so a few minutes in the case gets you through a commute.

Water and dust ratings, explained

Look for an IP rating. The first number is dust protection and the second is water protection.

• IPX4: resists sweat and splashes. The X means it was not rated for dust.
• IP54: protected from dust, and resists sweat and splashes.

Neither rating means waterproof. Earbuds with these ratings are fine for workouts and rain, but not for swimming or showers.

Charging options

Most new earbuds charge with a USB-C cable, the same plug most phones and laptops use now. Many cases also charge wirelessly on a Qi charging pad. If you already own a wireless charger, make sure the case supports it.

Make sure they work with your phone
